History
The third generation born in Queens, New York, Gigi was probably expected to stay there her whole life. After all, that's what everyone else had done. She was raised by her father Hank once her mother died when she was a toddler, but he didn't do it all alone. Thankfully, there was a neighbor lady a couple doors down who would keep an eye on Gigi when Hank had to rush off to work. Also to give a bit of a lighter touch, because while her dad was kind he was also more business than family, stricter than might have been necessary. That's what happened when someone was a cop, she supposed. All rules and very little nuance. That certainly caused problems as she got older, stayed out past curfew, preferred music and art to 'practical' things. There was always love there, but they did clash.
Gigi took a gap year after high school, not sure what she wanted to do or where she wanted to be. New York was great, it was home, but there was so much more world out there. Except right around the time she started seriously looking into colleges, she got sick. Not an outwardly feeling bad, throwing up kind of sick but a much scarier kind of sick with no symptoms, only discovered because of an elevated count on a routine blood test. Acute Myeloid Leukemia. It was like a whirlwind after that, quick and aggressive treatment that left Gigi feeling worse than she had before it started. Weeks in the hospital at a time, chemotherapy and recovery, all when she'd planned to be figuring out what to do with her life. Now she was hoping she'd still have one to get to.
She got into a clinical trial at UCSF, heading to the west coast for the first time in her life but she figured if she only had so much time, she didn't want to spend it all in New York. San Francisco was beautiful, sunny, didn't have horrible winters like she was used to dealing with. It was a welcome change, a breath of fresh air, and it worked. Gigi still had to do some additional therapy after the fact, and would always be fearful of recurrence, but she was in remission. She stayed on the west coast, not trying to rush into any kind of decisions on what to do in the near future, just enjoying whatever she wanted to do for the time being while she got used to 'normal' life again.
